There is an iconic scene in “Jurassic Park” where Jeff Goldblum explains chaos theory. “It simply deals with unpredictability in complex systems,” he says. “The shorthand is ‘the butterfly effect.’ A butterfly can flap its wings in Peking, and in Central Park, you get rain instead of sunshine.”
Blue Morphos wings are so large relative to their body that they have a characteristic loopy and bouncy flight pattern. It looks like they sway willy-nilly along with the wind. Despite their lackadaisical movement, they are actually quite strong fliers, giving birds and other predators a difficult time trying to snatch them out of the air. The shiny covering on top of their wings repels water, so Blue Morphos are one of the few butterflies that will fly in the rain.
In contrast, the underside of their wings is brown, visible when the butterflies are at rest and their wings are folded up. The drab color helps them blend in with their surroundings and hide from enemies like birds and large insects. If the butterflies are discovered, they have a second line of defense: two bronze-colored wing spots that look like eyes – perfect for scaring off would-be predators.
Blue Morphos are some of the largest butterflies in the world, with a wingspan reaching up to 8 inches.
