Fire Facts: Fire gobbles its way through trees and buildings like a hungry, living, breathing animal. Fire is a chemical reaction that feeds on fuel and oxygen. Give it plenty of both and it’ll keep on burning indefinitely. Thank goodness for firefighters, those brave men and women who stop fire in its tracks.
A fire engine has to carry firefighters and equipment to burning buildings. It also has to pump large volumes of water, sometimes over long distances, to extinguish the flames. Typical fire trucks carry about 500 gallons of water and draw more from street hydrants.
Fire Fighter Slang: Firefighter sayings and phrases aren’t fancy, but if you’re not a firefighter it could get confusing. We asked our Facebook fans to tell us some slang words that only a firefighter would know. Here are our favorite responses:
- “A, B, C and D. What side was it again?” — J Zack Spillers
- “CHAOS (Chief Has Arrived on Scene).” — Kitty Mae Wilson
- “Humping hose.” — Zac Thuney
- “Get the TIC.” — Erik John-Ray Krantz
- “Catch the plug and lay a line.” — Shawn Dunlap
- “Making a hit or dropping at the hydrant.” — Leonardo Bilello
- “Brain bucket and lid.” — Ken Janis
- “Truckies and Steppies.” — Wayne Fariss
- “Jakes.” — Susanne Peters
- “Installed a skylight.” — Cameron Greer
We made a few versions, with blue or grey fire cranes.
Give this Fire Engine card to thank an active fire fighter, veteran fire fighter, a probie, a rookie fireman, for fire heroes and fans, birthdays, reunions, invitations, Father’s Day, and lifelong friendship.
