Facts: Weighing in at just 4 grams (less than the weight of two pennies), these tiny birds beat their wings 80 times every second. Their hearts beat 1,260 beats per minute! Hummingbirds drink up to 10,000 calories of nectar from 1000 flowers every day and are the only birds that can fly backwards. They fly at speeds exceeding 34 mph! The hummingbird has been known to make a journey 2500 miles or more from Alaska to Central America. Because of this, the hummingbird is a symbol for doing that which seems impossible.
Hummingbirds, especially males, can be very territorial around feeders. When food is not plentiful, they do not like to share and will come after other hummingbirds who want to feed. The females are very protective of their nests. To reach nectar, both birds are attracted to the red and rosy colors of fuchsia, salvia, hibiscus and gooseberry.
Hummingbirds are the smallest birds in the world, but have the largest brains in proportion to their weight. When they dive down from on high, they can hit 60 miles per hour. And as any gardener knows, they are an essential pollinator as well as a prodigious flying insect predator.
