Description
Giraffes are the Gentle Giants of Africa. Our popup card honors this weird, lofty, towering animal and the giant baobab trees of the African plain.
Open the card to a mother and baby, standing near 3 baobab trees. After a pregnancy of 15 months, mom gives birth to a calf that weighs 100 to 150 pounds and is 6 feet tall! In less than a half an hour, the baby begins to stand and eventually walk with its mother’s gentle encouragement, and mother’s kicks.*
Giraffes are beasts you can’t help but look up to. They have the tallest legs on earth. Their feet are the size of dinner plates.
The Giraffe is more endangered than any gorilla, or almost any large mammal in the world.
Weighing up to two tons, the Giraffe is a colossal animal unlike any other.
They’ve got amazing eyelashes. Their kick can knock a lion dead.
Every single giraffe has a unique pattern, just like the fingerprint of a human.
They have a giant black sun-proof tongue.
They have the biggest heart of any land mammal.
*Mother Giraffe kicks her Newborn!
The birth of a baby giraffe is quite an earth-shaking event. The baby FALLS from its mother’s womb, some eight feet above the ground. It shrivels up and lies still, too weak to move.
Mother giraffe lovingly lowers her neck to smooch the baby. Then something incredible happens. She lifts her long leg and KICKS her baby, sending it flying up in the air and tumbling down on the ground. The mother kicks the baby again, and again! Until the baby giraffe, still trembling and tired, for the first time learns to stand on its feet.
Happy to see it standing on its own feet, the mother gives her baby yet another kick. Baby giraffe falls one more time but quickly recovers and stands up. Mother is delighted.
The baby has learnt an important lesson. Never mind how hard you fall, always remember to pick yourself up and get back on your feet.
Why does mother giraffe do this? She knows lions and leopards love giraffe meat. So unless her baby quickly learns to stand and run with the pack, it has no chance of survival.
