The girl in a beautiful gown, called vestido de quinceañera, is one of the most important celebrations in Latino culture, the tradition of the Quinceañera. This ceremony on a girl’s fifteenth birthday marks her passage to womanhood, to give thanks to God for his blessings, and to present a young woman to the community. From an Anglo perspective, the festival is like a “sweet sixteen” birthday party combined with a coming out ball for debutantes.
The Quinceañera is practiced by Spanish Catholics in the USA, and in all Latino countries, particularly Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Peru, Paraguay, Bolivia, Uruguay, Colombia, French Caribbean and French Guiana.
