Alligators have been on the planet since the time of the dinosaurs, about 240 million years ago, give or take a few million, and are considered “living fossils.”
These stealthy reptilian ambush predators can grow to weigh half a ton.
Part of the order ‘Crocodylia,’ there are 2 versions on the planet, the American (larger) one and the Chinese (smaller) type.
Alligators are social creatures and often stay in groups called congregations.
The name comes from the Spanish word “el lagarto,” which means “the lizard.”
Gator is also the mascot of University of Florida.
