Swan facts:
Swan courtship is both beautiful, and noisy.
Mute swans form the classic image of devotion, with their curved necks entwined in a perfect love heart. It’s part of a courtship ritual, in which pairs face each other and, with a ruffle of feathers and lifted wings, bow gracefully. But despite their name, mute swans are anything but silent. Their boisterous courtship dance is accompanied by a range of whooping, honking, and singing.
Swans are highly intelligent and remember who has been kind to them and who has not.
Swans symbolize grace and beauty on many levels. They are associated with love, music, and poetry. In Roman mythology swans were sacred to Venus, the goddess of love. In Greek tradition, they were often pictured singing to a lyre. Swans are closely associated with many Native American peoples. They are part of one of the most sacred mysteries of the Lakota/Dakota religion, in which the swan acts as a messenger of faith.
